HISTORY OF CONRAD'S
Since 1928, Conrads Confectionery has been providing discriminating dessert lovers with only the finest homemade candy and ice cream from the purest, freshest ingredients. When founder Fred Conrad coupled an old-fashioned soda fountain with his homemade candy business to ride out the depression in downtown Westwood, New Jersey, a local tradition was born.

Generations of children on their way home from school would sit at the counter for a malt, an ice cream cone, or a Conrad’s “heavy.” Dating couples can still be found sharing a booth in the “parlor” and a ice cream soda with two straws. It is not unusual to find third, fourth, and fifth generation Conrad’s returning again and again for the finest in chocolates, candy, and ice cream.

A hometown family business since its inception, Conrad’s is today owned and operated by the father and son team of John and JJ Krachtus - the son-in-law and grandson respectively of James “Jimmy” Pouletsos who started working for the store’s namesake, Fred Conrad, in 1935. A “soda jerk,” Pouletsos worked for Conrad before World War II and returned to his old job after the war ended. He soon became a part owner, eventually buying the business when Conrad retired in 1960.

When Pouletsos finally retired in 1985, his daughter, Corinne, and son-in-law, John Krachtus, took over. Now, their son, John James (JJ) Krachtus, is launching the business on the web. Throughout this 78-year history, Conrad’s Confectionery has continued the tradition of the old-fashioned candy maker, hand-dipping candies and
hand moulding every chocolate novelty.
